Pictured here are a handful of books, some Australia Post international customs declaration forms and some filled book mailers ready to go out the door. These have all been sent now to their destinations around the world and will be delivered to generous people who helped to make the content of HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream become much, much richer than I could have done so on my own.Twenty of these books have been sent out now, free, to charitable individuals whose images appear in the book. Such content mostly comprises vintage photos from Christmas 1979, production images of the ALIEN toy and other content, much of it never seen publicly before.

For all your help in expanding the substance of this book beyond my expectations, I am proud to send these items to you for having expressed your faith in this project by allowing to use your images. There’s some fantastic items permanently reproduced here with your kind permission. You all deserve to have these contributor copies land on your doorstep – without charge – as a sincere thank you for making this publication as remarkable as it could be. Thank you all. HIDEOUS PLASTIC – Book Now Available.

After five years of work, my first book, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream is now available for purchase. At this point in time, it is currently listed on eBay. I am organising other services but eBay has proven to reach more people who are interested in Kenner ALIEN toys than any other service so it’s an obvious first choice to launch this publication to the public.

This book is three hundred pages of information dedicated to the 1979 vintage Kenner ALIEN toy. Should you be curious, more information regarding the book is available on its About Page. Also of interest is a FREE thirty page excerpt you can download and see if it is of further interest to you.

Along with this announcement of the book’s availability, I would like to thank the many people who have supported this project in various ways. Firstly, Sylvie Blair at BookPOD, the publisher who had faith in this strange project and brought to bear critical resources needed to see it be completed.

A substantial number of people contributed to the book directly, expanding its content to an astonishing capacity. There are photos and other material present in this book appearing in public for the first time. You have all been duly credited for your greatly appreciated contributions.Gosh, there’s some astonishing stuff in there now and it wouldn’t have been possible without such willingness to share.

I’m also taking this opportunity to thank my mother, Shirley Wlodarzyk, for too many things, actually – but appropriately in the light of this book – it was her who gave me one of these toys for Christmas forty years ago. Who knew it would come to this? Thanks Ma! And thanks for all the support, too. 🙂

Finally, I would like to thank the people who have already purchased this book. Thank you so much for having faith in me and making purchases during the bumpy pre-order period earlier this year. FAQ Update – HIDEOUS PLASTIC.

As the release date for the book, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream is inching closer, the FAQ has been updated to match the current status of its impending availability. You can read the Frequently Asked Questions.The short version is, we are getting close to release. A few infrastructure details are all that needs to be addressed now. I am hoping to have more information regarding availability next week. (Which probably means the week after as I have discovered everything takes twice as long as anticipated.) For now, some site updates are currently also being addressed. The FAQ being one of them.

Being a FAQ, feel free to ask me any questions you may have regarding the book and I shall endeavor to answer them and post the Q&A details on that page.

Book Mailers. Exciting Stuff!

Actually, no. Book mailers are not all that exciting. What is exciting, however, is the prospect of sending out copies of HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream safely packaged to customers around the world very soon. Anyway, a delivery of these things was dropped off on my driveway just the other day and here’s what pallet of super sexy book mailers looks like. Okay, so they’re not that sexy, either; but this mundane pile of packaging is actually very important. Essential, even. Copies of the book will be sent across the globe to people in the US, Europe, UK and even closer to home, in Australia and New Zealand. Elsewhere, too, if you want one. Either way, these mailers will need to cover a lot of territory which they must do so safely and securely. To do so, the packaging must be capable of withstanding long distances and potentially rough handling. Being robust and protective of the contents is mandatory. These mailer items will do the job perfectly. This will ensure customers receive their copies in immaculate condition.

I’m taking his is my opportunity to show off how you can expect a copy of your book to arrive. Inside one of these things. These mailers are specifically designed for sending books. They are easy to use, easy for recipients to open and designed to withstand the rigors of transit. They are simple, strong, durable and will take a beating while the contents remain perfectly safe inside.

While the mailers themselves may not be super sexy and exciting; at least having customers know that copies sent to them will be as safe and secure as possible certainly is. After all, fresh minty goodness is what I would expect if I was on the receiving end of such goods. HIDEOUS PLASTIC Arrives.

A delivery of boxes has arrived on my doorstep and stored in the spare room. This pile of boxes represents five years worth of work on my part. Inside them are retail copies of HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream. As such, I am ecstatic this project has finally reached a point of being fully realised. I am now on the threshold of making these items available to the public.

Some work still needs to be done here as these all still need to be shrink wrapped with information backing sheets. Nonetheless, 500 copies will soon be available for purchase. Existing pre-orders will be the first items processed and sent out the door. I will get around to that task sometime soon as I am still awaiting the arrival of backing sheets.

What is this book about? You may well ask and you can find information about HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores every one can hear scream on the About Page. For now, pre-orders have been suspended due to technical issues on this blog but I hope to resume them in one capacity or another very soon. Such details will be available when I have them. Just keep an eye open on this site for further announcements.

An official release date is yet to be announced. Not long now, either way.

HIDEOUS PLASTIC – ALIEN Day 2020 Update.

ALIEN Day 2020, is upon us. Today, 4/26, we get to celebrate all things ALIEN. I have my contribution to make in the form of a progress update on the book dedicated to Kenner’s 1979 ALIEN toy, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream. Firstly, we’ve had a few hiccups that have caused more delays. Nonetheless, slow progress is still progress meaning we’re moving closer to publication and release despite the difficult conditions inflicted upon us all by a global health crisis. One of the aforementioned “hiccups” has been a difficult pre-order activity for the book. Due to errors/bugs/technical stuffz regarding currency conversion and postage price problems, I’ve had to remove the pre-ordering page. I am still looking into resolving these issues and hope to restore it at a later date. Nonetheless, all existing pre-orders will be honored and those who have purchased the book can expect to receive it in the mail soon after release. Right now, the book is in the publisher’s hands and ready to go to print. I’m just waiting to hear from them.

Anyway, onward with the good News. One feature of the book I haven’t previously mentioned was a pre-order bonus for early purchasers. Included with the pre-order copies will be one of a kind color art prints generated by deep dreaming software. There is a total of fifty prints and copies are restricted to one of each. Featuring a layout design inspired by old bubblegum cards, these unique plates measure 6×9 inches with no two alike. Pre-order customers will receive one of these color plates with each book. You will find it on the reverse side of the information sheet shrink wrapped to the back of the book. These prints are all individually numbered, 1-50 and packaged at random.

These items were designed a few years back using Deep Dream Generator to create.

Other than an issue with pre-orders not going according to plan and yet another delay from the publisher, everything else is ticking over assuredly well. I will take this opportunity to thank everyone who has pre-ordered the book. Please contact me If you have any questions. HIDEOUS PLASTIC – Final Proof Arrives.

This document arrived in the mail yesterday. It is the final proof copy of HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream. This galley proof is for my evaluation and approval and is effectively a test print of the finished publication readers can expect to be receiving soon. At this stage, I anticipate there will be no more corrections or additions to be made and the only remaining action required will be to instruct my publisher to tell the printer to press the button and set the presses into motion. We are now that close to publishing.

Today is April 1st but this is no joke. I am now on the threshold of actually publishing this book dedicated to the 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy. Last year, I ran an April Fool’s Day gag about the book being SOLD OUT. I received enough correspondence from disgruntled fans who thought they’d missed out on purchasing the book for me to be discouraged from duplicating that action. Nope. I am not going to ‘pull your tail’ again this year. I don’t think it would be fair. Besides, we all have enough challenges on our plates simply coping with a world wide threat to everyone’s health without that kind of unnecessary shenanigans. This is the real deal, folks. It’s running later than intended but it’s still making progress, to inch across that finish line and will be heading to you soon.

This book should be available in a few weeks. That is to say, if no more delays impede any further progress. While that is unlikely at this stage, we must yet face uncertain days and months ahead which we all must embrace; and anything conceivable (or otherwise) may yet happen. Stay safe. Stay indoors. Just a quick update for those of you who have pre-ordered copies of the upcoming book dedicated to the notorious 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream. Firstly, It’s all coming together very well now. A little slower than anticipated as dictated by my recent house move, subsequent renovations and emerging pandemic crisis. Nonetheless, progress on this project has not halted.

Importantly, I am currently awaiting to hear from the publisher to provide me with the final proof of the book. This should arrive soon and will need to be thoroughly examined. I have had the joy of adding several new images to the book since the previous proof copy was generated and the presentation is already very solid. I am looking forward to seeing the updated version in hand. People who have already seen the book have been suitably impressed with it, including individuals involved in the peer review process. So far, it’s garnered only positive responses.

So right now, we are planning to publish soon. Hopefully before the end of this month.

Site Updates – Pre-Orders Soon.

I’ve been working hard on this site lately and my book dedicated to the 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy has been in the publisher’s hands for a few weeks now. Soon we publish.

Importantly, pre-orders will become available soon. I am hoping this will happen sometime next week. I wanted to have them ready by now, but a couple of details still need to be finalised. Nothing crippling or debilitating; just minor stuff that has resulted in a delay. It’s no real problem and I learned a long time ago this Project needs to be Goal oriented rather than Deadline driven. To this end, we are almost ready to announce pre-orders. Nonetheless, a few changes around the site have been made during the past month or so.

It’s been tidied up a lot. Much of the front page has had graphical upgrades and there are now 12 random header images for you to click on and play with. Have fun with those. All the side bar graphics have also been updated. Many of the pages linked from the drop down menu have also been significantly improved with updated information. Most importantly, there’s a placeholder image on the top right of the sidebar that will become the button to link to the pre-order page for the book. It only needs to be replaced and linked now as the final graphic for this button is just waiting to be posted. Yeah. We are now that close to going live with pre-orders.

Once the pre-orders do go live, you’ll see the book is being offered at a discount price to pre-order customers. This reduced price pre-order incentive will be live until I have stock in hand, which will take about a month. Then the full price will be instated permanently. I have a good idea what the final pricing will be but I am just waiting on confirmation from the publisher. At this stage we are looking good and steady.

I’ve also had the site’s security updated. It is now fully SSL compliant making it truly https secure for handling transactions via Paypal. This is a good thing and a long time coming. What else is there? A few tidy up tasks and preparations on the back end here and there and really, we’re almost ready. That’s it. We are almost good to go.

Thank you for sticking around and going the distance with me on this amazing Project. I didn’t expect it to take four and a half years to complete. All the same, we are now on the threshold of achieving our goal; and it feels good, too.

HIDEOUS PLASTIC Book Update.

As today is the first day of HIDEOUS PLASTIC’s 4th year online, I’m taking this opportunity to update the current status on the book, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream. A lot has happened since I last openly discussed the status of the book and excellent News is to be shared.

The short version is this unique full colour, near 300 page volume dedicated to the 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy will be available next year and we now have a clear path to publication.

Here’s a quick rundown of recent activities. The final manuscript has been locked down and complete for some time now. In October, proof copies of the book were created. 5 of them, to be specific. The purpose of these early copies is simple. They are for evaluation, correction, peer review and legal advice. These tasks are absolutely necessary and unavoidable. They are behind me now and a clear path to publication is now open.

Significantly, my final round of assessment and discussion with my legal advisor took place in November. He was impressed with the book as a whole and gave the current manuscript a complete Pass without any changes necessary to any text or image content. This means despite being an unauthorised/unlicenced product, the book is now good to publish and still be compliant with copyright laws. My legal advisor is a copyright attorney with 35 years experience in corporate level Law. His credentials are solid. I am more than pleased with his valuable guidance and feedback as this now complete process provides me with security to proceed.

Now the legal concerns have now been dealt with, corrections have become the priority. There’s been a few small changes since the proofs were run off and a thorough testing of the index and contents pages is the current big task. So far, these are looking good and accurate with any changes themselves being nothing substantial. Minor grammar, layout details and image content has been adjusted. That’s all.

As to when the book will become available for purchase, I am working to follow a tentative pipeline and if all goes well, it is intended pre-orders for the book will open in late January. I anticipate actual printing will take place in February with copies posted in March. With a little luck, they should arrive on doorsteps in late April. Just in time for ALIEN Day, April 26. That’s the current plan. Notwithstanding unexpected delays (Oh, I know all about those!) this proposal is achievable.

Either way, it won’t be long now before we pay a visit to the printer next year. The final round of legal advice has been completed and proof copies in hand, we are on the last stretch to see publication. Next year will be a very Happy New Year, regardless.

Today is my Birthday. Let’s celebrate!

On my part, I will do so by releasing the latest public excerpt from my upcoming book about ugly old toys, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream. This version is Free! It is also the final version to be released prior to publication.

This PREVIEW EDITION V0.41 is an updated 30 page excerpt from the current manuscript. This Free! excerpt delves extensively into the dark and murky history of the 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy when it was released 40 years ago. A decidedly strange children’s toy with a distinctly strange history.

Please let me know what you think of it. As I mention above, this is the last version prior to printing. Significantly, if any corrections are required this is the absolute last opportunity to implement any changes. Once printed, it’s permanent.

That’s it. They’re all gone, all 500 copies have been claimed in pre-order and online sales. After becoming available for sale 2 weeks ago on March 21, 2019 this item is Out of Stock and is now no longer available.

Fast sales of this volume are being attributed to the unique nature of the book and purchasers responded very quickly. Happy 2nd Anniversary, HIDEOUS PLASTIC!

Yep. That’s right. For 2 years now, HIDEOUS PLASTIC has been live. It’s been relatively smooth sailing throughout the past year with a lot of News postings on the front page and other content scattered throughout the site as well. Notwithstanding a period of about 4 months where everything slowed down to a crawl due to moving house at the time, I have returned to making regular updates.

I’m still living in a house full of unopened boxes and still tidying up my old residence but generally speaking, the uncomfortable and difficult move has gone as well as could be expected. No breakages and nothing lost during the move. That’s a win!

Nonetheless, everything is ticking over as planned here on the site and it has grown substantially during the past 12 months. Established areas like the News and Reviews, areas have grown and I’ve added a ton of Other Stuff as well. There’s a lot of content here now. Take some time to look around. If you interested in ALIEN stuff, I think you’ll like it.

To help celebrate our 2nd ‘birthday’ online, I’ve cobbled together a list of my Top 10 favourite ALIEN action figures. Go check it out! There’s a good diversity in there but there’s no surprise to regular visitors of HIDEOUS PLASTIC which item came in at No.1. I mean, really..? It’s not that hard to guess.

Also of interest to visitors will be the welcome News of progress on the upcoming book, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream. I had a very, very successful and rewarding meeting with my publisher during November (Nah… I didn’t tell anyone about it. 😉 ) and we have decided we’re ready to publish early next year.

To this end you can expect the very first full color 200+ page book dedicated to the 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure available around March, 2019. That’s Official.

This has been complete for some time and is now in the hands of the publisher for editing, typesetting etc. At this point I’m happy to discuss my next Project. These past 8 weeks have been spent laying and revising the groundwork for HIDEOUS PLASTIC Vol.s 2&3. It’s no secret my intention to release a non-fiction trilogy based on ALIEN action figures has always been on the cards but until now these 2 volumes have been pushed into the background. They are now both being brought forward for full development.

While the development to completion of these next 2 books is heavily dependent upon the success of Vol.1, my publisher is confident that this will be the case. The pipeline to see Vol.2 appear in about 24 months time; with Vol.3 to follow up sometime soon after that, has been set in place. Yep. We are doing it!

So, here’s a little preview of what to expect. I’ve posted these images before but the cover mock ups for both books provide you with an indication of what the content for each one will be:

So, with 4 productive years behind me (I’ve been working on the first book long before the website was launched) and at least 2 more work intensive years ahead, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have helped and supported this site.

Thank you to everyone who helped expand and contributed to the various sections of the site, especially the Kenner Prototypes gallery. That stuff is incredible and that area of the site was not possible to build without your assistance. Thank you to everyone who called my attention to Newsworthy items. HIDEOUS PLASTIC Preview Edition Feedback.

I’m just going take this opportunity to provide visitors to this site with a reminder the Preview Edition of HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream is now available for download. This 30 page excerpt includes the entire first chapter of the book.

This isn’t just a promotional exercise – although that’s a valid activity in its own right – more importantly, I am seeking to make this book as accurate as possible. This chapter deals with the early history of the toy when it was released in 1979 and verifying its content as accurate has not been an easy task. Right now, it’s looking very solid but I still need to ensure details are correct. Any assistance is welcome. Contact details are in the document.

Anybody wanting to provide feedback in the way of corrections has about 2 weeks to do so. August 31, 2018 is the closing date for such input. After which, all content will be locked and it’s off to the editor and typesetting. Much of the work is now done. Right now, I’m just waiting on some correspondence and permissions from people to use third party material in the book. So, while I wait for these responses, I am going to go pack boxes and move house.

Minor Updates to HIDEOUS PLASTIC Preview Edition.

I have made some minor updates to the Free downloadable PREVIEW EDITION of the upcoming book dedicated to the 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream.

While these updates are minor and may not account for much I am taking this opportunity to release this latest version with an important deadline. Anyone wanting to submit corrections to the manuscript will be able to do so until August 31, 2018.

Please pass around word of this deadline and download the Free 30 page excerpt and check it out. This is important. After August 31, the manuscript will be forwarded onto my legal advisor for approval and then passed onto the Editor. All facts must be verified as correct at that time. This will be the final opportunity to ensure the text is accurate prior to publication. Any feedback to achieve this goal is welcome.

HIDEOUS PLASTIC – FREE Preview Edition, Now Available.

Well, I have nothing but good News today and quite a decent slice of it. So sit back and lap it up! Today’s update on the progress of HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream includes the major announcement that the latest version of the Preview Edition is now available. This 30 page excerpt from the book is FREE! So grab it now.

The purpose of this release goes well beyond just merely being a promotional exercise. V0.30 is the last version that will be publicly available prior to publication. It requires fact checking and verification before the complete manuscript is handed over to an editor. As such, it is imperative feedback addressing any issues that may be present in this excerpt is received. Feel free to distribute the .pdf to whoever you like for this goal.

That’s not the only News for today. You will notice on the right sidebar donations are now being accepted using PayPal.

Originally I was going to launch the Patreon page today but circumstances have changed in my favor during this past week. A Patreon campaign is still being considered but is now currently on hold. The big News for today may preclude its implementation, altogether. I have recently been in discussion with an investor who is interested in possibly fully funding the publication of the book.

Needless to say, this is exceptional News and it may preclude any necessity for crowd funding at all. Here’s hoping all goes well. I have retained the option for PayPal as I am aware some people do want to support and assist funding this Project, regardless. Also, at this early stage of negotiations, the proposed support of an investor may yet amount to zero. I may yet have to resort to Patreon.

I’m being transparent on this issue simply because I didn’t want to launch the Patreon campaign today (as some of my readers have been anticipating) and then 4 months down the track announce “Oh, and by the way, an investor has fully funded the Project.” I’m sure you can understand the complications that would arise from such an outcome. Messy, to say the least. So, Patreon is on hold right now pending further developments and negotiations with this Third Party.

If the investor does support the Project, all finance raised by PayPal donations will be treated as surplus funds and will be committed towards generating bonus material for the book. More details regarding those plans pending commitment from the potential investor. Nonetheless, such bonus material is something I have been contemplating for some time but haven’t been confident of my ability to afford it. That may have changed in the last few days. So go ahead and PayPal as much as you like. Please do. Either outcome, involving an investor or not, ensures PayPal funds won’t be wasted.

Updated V0.30 HIDEOUS PLASTIC Preview Edition – SOON.

Let’s keep the 39th Anniversary Celebration of the release of ALIEN alive with a little announcement, shall we? Very soon, I will be releasing a 30+ page excerpt from the book, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream.

The excerpt contained in the ‘Preview Edition’ will be the first chapter of the book in its entirety, dealing with the history of the 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure.

My reasons for releasing this portion of the book publicly is manifold. Promotional intention is definitely a good reason and high on the list; but I have other motivations needing to be accommodated. Of most importance, this item will be the last opportunity to make corrections and other changes or additions before the entire manuscript is passed onto an Editor. Once in the Editor’s hands, the content MUST be accurate.

To this end, I am hoping the Preview Edition will be passed around to people who will be in a position (former Kenner employees, for example) to help with the final push to make this book as accurate as possible. During the course of writing this volume, I’ve discovered some ‘truths’ that are simply out of touch with reality. If any such inaccuracies still exist in the text, this will be the last opportunity to see them corrected and eliminated prior to publication.

I will need feedback in this regard. The Preview Edition V0.30 will be available to download from the sidebar at right. See the already extant right hand sidebar items currently marked by a pair of ‘PLACEHOLDER’ graphics? Yeah. That’s where it will be available for download. FREE. The Download and Patreon items will both go live on the same date, June 15, 2018.

I’m looking forward to posting this new version of the Preview Edition. An earlier version (since removed due to it becoming redundant) was posted previously on this site and the feedback I received from that earlier iteration was invaluable. I expect the new version will generate just as much useful information, advice, recommendations and revelations.

ALIEN Day HIDEOUS PLASTIC Book Photos.

As a contribution to the celebration that is ALIEN Day, here’s a selection of images from the upcoming book I am working on, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream. 10 pages of it, in fact. This book is (currently) an unauthorised publication, dedicated to the original 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure, its history, maintenance and just about everything you could want to know about the infamous old toy.

The 200 page book is intended to be published by the end of this year. I’ll be starting up a PATREON page to help generate the necessary funding to complete the final editing, typesetting and printing of the book. To do so, I will need your help.

HIDEOUS PLASTIC – The (It’s Almost) ALIEN Day Update Video.

ALIEN Day, April 26 2018, is coming and seeing as everyone else is getting in on the act, it seems fitting to do so myself. So here is an update on the status on the book I am writing about the 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream. Considering it’s ALIEN Day soon, what better way to do do so than with a short 1 minute video.

HIDEOUS PLASTIC – Documenting the Perfect Organism provides you with a peek into the current manuscript and shows off some of its content.

Also coming soon is the opportunity for you to support this bold venture with donations via PayPal or PATREON (Both, if you are so inclined.). That option will be open to you soon should you find the video enticing enough to support the funding of this Project.

As far as the book itself is concerned, most of the content is locked down and ready to hit the next phase of development. Nonetheless, a lot of work still needs attention. I am still chasing up permission to use specific content items intended to appear in the book – and that’s taking some time for people to respond. As usual. That’s normal and it does slow the process down a little. lol.

Aside from that, it’s almost ready to hand over to the Editor very soon for a complete grammatical and US localisation. (I live in Australia; and while my English is fine, I want the book to be localised/localized for its largest target readership – the US). There’s also one more visit to my legal advisor as well and that will happen soon. All this is still yet to take place and we haven’t even gotten anywhere near actual publication. Just give it time.

So yes, there’s still a ton of work to be done and at this stage but I estimate a late 2018 release.
