About that Custom ALIEN PEZ Dispenser…

I frequently see this image of the ALIEN PEZ dispenser posted on Facebook and forums and naturally some people want to know where to get one. The truth is, it’s a unique custom item designed by artist, Rat D and is not available anywhere. However, if you are committed, you can make one yourself that looks near identical to this item.

You will need some essential components for creating your own custom ALIEN PEZ dispenser. They aren’t too difficult to come by. Using parts cannibalised from an ALIEN MPC kit (Left) and a PEZ dispenser (Center) you can assemble your own ALIEN PEZ dispenser (Right). The head and tail from the kit are used and mounted onto the dispenser.

In case you’re wondering, here’s the finished MPC ALIEN kit as assembled by Sabres21768. The details of the head and tail are easily discernible as the same as those present on the custom PEZ item:

The MPC kit was originally released in 1979 so it’s rare – and expensive. You’ll probably won’t want to wreck one of those for this purpose. Fortunately, you have an alternate choice. The kit was re-released in 2013 as a Round 2 reprint edition and is still available.  Shopping about should net you one for a decent price, under US$50. It’s more or less exactly the same item in the box as the older 1979 kit but the newer pressing is considerably cheaper. The kit was also released in a 1984 pressing and also again in 1999 as an AMT release. All versions of the kit share the same water colour box art – except for the 1999 AMT release, which features a photograph of the finished kit on the box top.

Here’s an extensive investigation into the MPC ALIEN kit and it’s variations.

As for the dispenser itself, a cheap one on Ebay should do the trick. Just pick a color of your preference for a dollar apiece and go with that. Black would be considered traditional for this purpose.

There’s no instructions available anywhere as to how to attach the head to the hinge arrangement and the tail to the base of the dispenser so some preparedness for experimentation on your part will be required to assemble these parts.  As to the tongue on the image pushing out the candy?  Well, I’m sorry to say it but the tongue was added later using graphics manipulation software. It’s not likely you’ll get that feature working – basically it’s fake.

Here’s the original unaltered image showing the completed item sans extended tongue:

All the same, good luck if you choose to make one of these. I’ll be very interested in seeing the results. At the very least, you know how it was made. It was never a production item by PEZ, licenced or otherwise. Occasionally, similar custom PEZ items can be found on ebay or other online sales services.
