1992, Space Marine Bishop Android.

  • Year: 1992
  • Size: 5 inches.
  • Product Line: Produced by Kenner (Tonka).

Round 1 of Kenners ALIENS series of action figures included creatively free representations of popular characters seen in the 1986 movie.  Here, we have a prototype of the Space Marine Bishop Android figure.

This item – like all the human(oid) figures for the series – had only a passing resemblance at best when compared to the characters bey are based on.  Bishop probably possesses the greatest departure from them all.  Not only is his appearance anomalous but his behavior is as well.  We clearly see Bishop decline taking a pistol when one is offered to him in the movie, yet the 1992 action figure features a minigun the shape and dimensions of an automatic transmission included as one of 2 accessories.  The minigun is also included with this prototype of the figure, demonstrating the free rotation of the barrel much like the mass market version.

Much like the figure when it was finally released in 1992, this prototype can also be disassembled to simulate battle damage thus revealing the ‘bionic’ interior of Bishop’s torso.  This item is hand painted and was possibly used in photographic promotional material prior the release of these figures.
