Someone in Canberra, Australia is selling a (near) mint condition 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure in an unopened box for AU$18,999.  That’s about US$14,150.

The figure is Action Figure Authority (AFA) graded at U90 NM+/MT B85 W95 F90.  This means the figure is previously uncirculated or never distributed to stores and is generally near mint condition from the manufacturer.

AFA graded figures in similar condition occasionally appear on Ebay, usually in the US.  I’ve seen them listed also from Singapore and UK as well.  While many of them are good clean, straight samples, this particular item does appear to be near flawless as small creases or wrinkles can develop on the boxes.  Usually, near mint/mint condition figures in boxes like this one sell for 4 figures but a 5 figure price tag like this isn’t a precedent.  Around the $2,000 and upwards mark is common for similarly graded AFA figures.

So if you’ve got AU$18,999 / US$14,150 just lying around handy and would rather buy an old toy that nobody wanted back in 1979 – and you don’t need a new car or house deposit – then this item is fantastic!  Better save up those pennies, kiddies, if you want to buy Daddy’s toys.

…and to think these things were quickly discounted to half price – or even less – when they were first released due to a misfired marketing strategy.
