eBay – Kenner ALIEN and Mutilated Box for Sale.

UPDATE: Sold for US$286 (11 bids)

If you want a Kenner ALIEN toy and a box to go with it, they don’t come any cheaper than this sample currently being auctioned on eBay. While the figure is only moderately incomplete, the box itself is extremely mutilated and is a miracle it was never thrown out in the garbage.  Nonetheless, starting at US$199.99 this auction item will sell. The figure itself is only missing the dome but it’s otherwise complete. The crest is present on the back, the jaws work as they should, the head paint is in good state and still glows in the dark; and it even holds a pose with its arms, which is always welcome.  A figure in this condition alone will sell for around US$150 to US$250, so the starting bid is very reasonable. Alas, the box itself is in terrible condition, crushed, torn and missing multiple pieces along with a variety of other imperfections, hardly making it a desirable piece. Importantly, it’s still a 1979 Kenner ALIEN box and while it is in seriously distressed state, it will find a home. Taking into consideration some lucky bidder may land this auction for less than US$250 that means they will effectively getting the box for free. But what can you do with it? The item is missing both the red insert card and the B&W poster that should be included with this sale. The figure easily displays well on its own without the box so an option is to keep the figure and sell the box.  It will probably sell for around US$100 to US$150, even in this irrepairably crushed state.

Another option is to carefully flatten out the package and frame it. Vintage items like this can look stunning when given presentation inside a quality frame with a black background. I’ve seen other vintage toy boxes afforded this treatment and it can transform what amounts to a piece of rubbish too precious to throw out into a display item that would proudly be at home as a museum relic. That’s a great final, respectful treatment for a shabby and abused piece of packaging that has been lucky to last this long at all.

Give it a home, I say, flattened out behind a sheet of glass and framed on your wall.
