Happy ALIEN Day, 2023!

Happy ALIEN Day! Today we celebrate all things from space, covered in slime and wanting to rip your face off with multiple sets of chrome plated dentures. What a day! What a lovely day! For my part in celebrating, here’s a project I’ve been working on for the last six months. This item is a heavily modified 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy. I am pleased to introduce to you, the Crystal Wizard.

Oh, alright. He’s not in possession of any magic wands, spell books or other silly Harry Potter nonsense. He’s just a lovely, “dayglo” coloured happy Big Chap featuring a head to toe full body makeover. Originally painted all white, I have owned this figure for a long time and decided to customise him further. This is the result.

All of his base parts are recovered broken and mutilated pieces discarded from other Kenner ALIEN toy rebuilds I’ve performed on other ALIEN restorations. Simply put, these left over pieces are too good to throw out – but not good enough for using to recondition and rebuild other samples of this old toy. His various body parts are painted in bright colours, embellished further with tiny stars, glitter sprinkled in varnish, cheap diamantes and some sweet, sweet little round smiley face stickers I found in a cheap local gift shop.

In regard to the figure itself, some of his parts are reproduction items. I have a very ambivalent approach to repro items as they can be problematic and confused with genuine parts; but they can be useful, too. Here, such facsimiles are appropriately used to help further complete the detailing of this loud & lurid objet d’art.

The typical Kenner parts that often go missing from these toys have been replaced. These include the (red painted) head dome, the dorsal crest and all four pieces comprising his tongue and teeth. Other parts such as the damaged head, legs, arms and tail have been made good with repairs; and such repairs have been concealed by his coloured integument and other adornments.

I have to say it, he was a load of fun to customise and decorate. A surprising amount of time went into creating this unique item. No. He is not for sale, sorry. Nonetheless, I am happy to make my first ALIEN Day News item feature this wonderful customised piece. Isn’t he beautiful? Isn’t he adorable..? I love the Crystal Wizard. He is a wondrous joy to behold! lol.

Have a great day and please check back for any more ALIEN Day News I may have to post throughout the day (and most likely tomorrow, as well.) Have a great time. đŸ˜‰
