eBay – “Vintage ALIEN Kenner 1979 … Rare Authentic” for Sale.

Living in France and looking to purchase a much sought after 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy? This appealing item may look like a good opportunity at US$550 but it’s always a good action to look a little deeper, do some important research and understand Kenner’s ALIEN toy has re-appeared in many different variants. This is one of those variants – and it wasn’t made by Kenner, either. So… what is it, exactly? Derived as it is from the older 1979 action figure, this listed item is a built version of Halcyon’s 1991 vinyl kit. It draws an indirect relationship with the Kenner ALIEN toy as it is a recast of the intermediate Tsukuda Hobby ALIEN repressing released in 1984. So, it’s not a Kenner at all but rather a third generation re-pop of the nefarious toy. It’s not complete either. It’s missing the (very) pliable rubber dome that should be present on the head along with the rear glans-like cranial posterior. These are both parts typically associated with this version of the 1991 ALIEN model kit.

The kit itself isn’t one of Halcyon’s better items either. It has a poor reputation among modellers for being a blatant reproduction of the original Kenner toy except it is cast in vinyl and cut up into pieces which you have to re-assemble yourself. The 1991 kit is a long way from being well regarded, even by Halcyon collectors; but herein lies its legacy due to its relationship to the older toy. It is still a genuine part of the 1979 Kenner ALIEN family but expecting US$550 for it is a bit much.

Nonetheless, the same seller does have another Kenner ALIEN action figure for sale; and this second item is the real deal. As such, this genuine 1979 made toy is a much better value item than the one being offered here. At only US$440, it’s a little rugged looking and lacking the smoky dome on the head but it may also hold the super special surprise bonus of being one of the rarer Canadian made samples of the toy. These items were made in a lesser volume than the US made product. Significantly They are known to have been distributed outside of Canada to international markets, including Australia and Europe. At US$440, it’s a good purchase so go buy that one instead.
