9 Inch Kotobukiya ArtFX Alien Comparison.

Just thought I’d toss this up on the front page.  The 9 inch tall Kotobukiya figure is arguably one of the best figures available and certainly the best of its type in the 7-9 inch range of figures.  It’s a startling piece of work featuring some tremendous detail including all the familiar body parts right down to the subtle creasing of the suit as worn by the actor and stuntmen involved in the production of the 1979 movie.
It’s actually difficult to appreciate the amount of detail on this item, even when a ruler is placed next to it.  It’s a piece that borders on phenomenal for what’s on offer in this small statuette.  For a proper appreciation of the detail on this almost unbelievable piece, it’s best comparing it directly to other ALIEN action figures.

So here is the ArtFX ALIEN figure (2017) next to some other popular manufacturer’s items:

1. MacFarlane, 2002 (From AvP 2 pack).
2. NECA, 2017 (ALIEN: Covenant).
3. SEGA, 2004.
4. Kenner, 1979.

As you can see, the size of the ArtFX figure is comparable to the  MacFarlane (1.) and NECA (2.) items.  Most noticeable is the level of detail and the accuracy of proportions.  Neither the MacFarlane or the NECA figure can compete in terms of fidelity.  While the SEGA (3.) item is a great figure in its own right, the detail on it lacks the finely tuned presentation of the Kotobukiya item.  Finally, the big Kenner (4.) action figure is a great item and it dwarfs the Kotobukiya statuette; but it’s also in a completely different class entirely.  Attempting to compare the detail of a (near) 40 year old toy with an adult collectible released last year is not going to stand up well – but the distinct disparity in size is astonishing.

Astonishing because the ArtFX figure is so well detailed.  On its own and without any comparisons, it’s almost a shocking revelation the figure is so small. It’s only 9 inches tall, and stands as high as your average NECA ALIEN figure.  I’ve often thought an scaled up version would be ideal.  A 16 inch tall version of the ArtFX item would be absolutely fantastic.  The detail is more than adequate to hold up to a larger iteration of the figure and it’s proven to be a popular one as it has more or less sold out world wide.  I’ve love to see Kotobukiya release a larger version of this figure.  I believe a lot of people would welcome it.

I’ve also reviewed the Kotobukiya ArtFX Alien on HIDEOUS PLASTIC.  Check it out if you want more info on this amazing Little Chap.
