NEXT STOP: ALIENS 35th Anniversary.

ALIEN Day 2021 is now behind us but the fun isn’t over yet. Not by a long shot. Following on the 2019 40th Anniversary celebration of ALIEN, this year will see the 35th Anniversary of its sequel, ALIENS. Released in US cinemas on July 18th 1986, ALIENS has arguably become the most popular movie in the entire series. It’s gearing up to be a fascinating year for ALIENS fans, we all know it. I am expecting a slew of new products, toys, collectibles and other goodies will be released by a wide range of manufacturers during the coming year. Why little to none of these items have been announced this past ALIEN Day is a mystery. Blame Covid, I guess. As usual, I’ll be very interested in what is released; maybe even post a review or two. That’s something that’s been somewhat lacking on this blog for about a year now. I have to find a way to rectify this situation. ALIENS 35th Anniversary may just provide the correct impetus to do so.

HIDEOUS PLASTIC – Sale Ends Soon.

It’s over for another year and ALIEN Day certainly was low key this year.Aside from a handful of announcements and reveals it was certainly smaller than previous years. Mind you, much of the world is still dealing with a global health crisis, so it’s completely understandable. Nonetheless, we participated in our own celebration of ALIEN Day; but it too must come to an end. For the next two days, the half price discount offer for the book HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream will still be available. It will, however, be over at the end of April. That’s kind of like, two days away. If you’re looking to acquire a copy this book for the current low and very reasonable reduced price of AU$32.50/US$25.50 (plus postage), then time is running out. Prices will return to RRP on May 1st.

Get your copy now from eBay now. Shipped from Australia. ALIEN Day was fun as usual but sure was over all too quickly; but certainly not over for us. Not by a long shot. 😉

ALIEN Day: Funko POP! Ripley & Loader.

It looks like Funko have a new ALIENS POP! figure coming out soon. Here she is, Ellen Ripley with her rompin’, stomin’  bitch slappin’ powerloader, announced on ALIEN Day.It looks like this Super Size POP! item is intended to be a GameStop exclusive but it appears it will be available in all kinds of places. It is currently available right now as a pre-order and will probably become available at all places that sell Funko stuff (That is everywhere, really.) in June. Nice looking figure. Too bad the POP! stuff is a pass for me otherwise I’d be all over this item.

Weta Workshop have announced the latest in their line up of satirical takes of the ALIEN series. This one featuring an ALIENS warrior holding Casey’s head. Casey being the decapitated doll head Newt lost during her abduction in ALIENS. Pre-order is now available for this item.

Here’s a few words from the maker of this item, “Xenomorph Warrior joins our rapidly expanding Mini Epics family.” This seven inch vinyl figure is price tagged US$49.99 and has an anticipated release date of around around August/September this year.

ALIEN Day: New Reaction Figures

Seven new Super7 ReAction figures based on characters from the first four ALIEN movies are now available on the Super7 web store. The most remarkable of this 2021 ALIEN Day release is the new Dog Alien. This is the first time any characters from ALIEN 3 have been represented in the 3.75 retro themed line up. Also new on the ever growing Super7 ALIEN roster is the Newborn. Likewise, this is the first character appearing from ALIEN Resurrection in ReAction figure format. They are both very welcome additions. The Dog Alien looks super neat. The Newborn, I’m not so sure of that one. It certainly is a bit weird. Also available from today are five other new ALIEN  and ALIENS ReAction figures. These aren’t quite as exciting as they’re more or less new variants of already extant characters, utilising already familiar sculpts. There’s a new version of the Alien and it’s good if a little bit of an eyeball roller; and long overdue for retirement. There’s three new versions of the ALIENS Xenomorph. Ummm… That’s OK, I think. Plus a mystifying “I’m not too sure why they made this variant?” of Hudson; which looks like Super7’s previous release of Hudson but featuring a grimace and mounted on a “Game over Man, game over!” card featuring layout stylistically reminiscent of one of Bill Gold’s early ALIEN posters. I guess it’s OK. …I guess.

Anyway, the Dog Alien is clearly the leader of this pack. Newborn comes in at second place for its outstanding weirdness and the others all come in some place after that. A great selection all round and a welcome reveal from Super7 on ALIEN day, if a little uneven.

Each figure is available now from Super7’s webstore for US$18 each.

Super7 Reveal ALIEN Day Teaser image.

Super7 have released this teaser image for 2021 ALIEN Day and it looks like art by Den Beauvais put to taunting use beneath Hudson’s well known stenciled quote. Of course, no product details, availability or pricing accompany this teaser. Nonetheless, I am looking forward to adding some more 3.75 ALIEN ReAction figures to my collection. More information will no doubt be revealed within 24 hours.

Sure, it’s not quite April 26 in some parts of the world just yet; but here in Australia, it sure is. Actually, it’s already mid afternoon. In a few minutes time I’ll be exiting the house to make my meandering path to a double screening of ALIEN and ALIENS at Melbourne’s Astor theater with friends! YES! This gon b fun! 🙂

It’s April 26th; and do you know what that means, kiddies? Yeah! That’s right! It’s ALIEN Day! …and it’s much, much better than Christmas Day; or your weird Uncle’s Birthday, too, for that matter. eBay – Kenner Tongue Part for Sale.

Are you looking to complete a death dealing tongue for your 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy? Lucky for you, half of one is available on eBay right now. This one is being auctioned with bidding starts at US$35.

Remember! This sale is for only one half of the tongue – the upper half. Bidding is certainly commencing at the high end of what these sell for, which is usually around US$25 per piece. Sometimes a pair might sell for US$35, which is itself rare. Then again, forty year old genuine parts like these are becoming very difficult to find and demand for them certainly hasn’t abated. It’s a safe bet this item will sell without being passed in.

UPDATED – MPC ALIEN Kits.

A major new addition has been made to the already lengthy article on MPC ALIEN kits. Today, I added no less than thirty six images of constructed and customised model kits. These new images comprise the collection belonging to Japanese ALIEN fan, Naoto Okawa.  You can now view the entire gallery of new images. This update adds significantly more content to the article.

I love updating existing pages on the site with content like this. This particular addition was a real joy to present to the world and it expands the article on the MPC ALIEN kit to three pages. Fantastic stuff. Of course, this is all only possible with the kind permission of Naoto Okawa allowing me to do so. Thank you, Nao, for sharing your collection with us all. This is a genuinely remarkable and unique collection.

UPDATED: Gentle Giant ALIEN Prototypes.

Images of a pair of twenty four inch tall Gentle Giant product development samples have been added to the section dedicated to ALIEN prototype figures. Featured on this new page is a 3D printed concept ALIEN piece painted blue. Also included are images of an artist’s proof copy of what would eventually be released as Gentle Giant’s inaugural glow in the dark ALIEN action figure. The glow in the dark figure is just one of a series of four oversized Kenner ALIEN tribute items Gentle Giant released during 2014 and 2015.  It doesn’t end there. if you are curious about how these two over-sized work in progress brutes are further intimately related to each other, you can read about them here. At a solid two foot tall apiece, these outstanding samples are fantastic.

NECA Release TMNT Sewer Monster Figure.

NECA have released the latest in their range of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures. A new, fully articulated Sewer Monster is now available for purchase. There is no doubt the morphology of this character bares more than just a passing resemblance to an Alien. So much a resemblance, several years back, NECA released a re-coloured AvP-R ALIEN action figure mimicking this character, dubbed the “Sewer Mutation Warrior Alien”. Now, NECA have returned with a full and complete fresh take on the TMNT Sewer Monster.

This item is available now for US purchasers and if you are an international buyer, you are also being catered to. Here’s what NECA have to say about this fantastic item “This Ultimate Pizza Monster towers over the Turtles at 9″ tall, and includes its juvenile Pizza Monster form, pizza in box and a remote control device. Comes in collector-friendly window box packaging.” I have no interest in TMNT stuff. Well, not really; but despite it’s fully licenced status, I am sure one of these jaundice things would look right at home standing aside all the other weird ass bootleg, ring-in and knock off ALIEN toys and figures I own. One day.

REVIEW: Mexico Bootleg “X-Raptor” Toy.

There are some things I love. I mean really, REALLY LOVE. I love dinosaurs. I love Aliens. I love toys. I love surrealist art. I love weird stuff made in Mexico. I absolutely love it when all of these things are tossed into a large melting pot to craft a single object like this weird bootleg dinosaur/Alien hybrid toy made in Mexico. It doesn’t happen often enough and it can’t get any better than this; but that’s just my opinion.I also love writing reviews. So if you want to witness my totally biased and fully subjective opinion on this outstanding example of JURASSIC WORST, then you’re in luck!

It’s just been reviewed here on HIDEOUS PLASTIC.

eBay – Almost Complete Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

Most of his pieces are there, making him almost complete and he’s for sale on eBay for a low, low price. At only US$199.99, he’s a bargain. So… why hasn’t he sold yet?  Let’s take a closer look and see if this four decades old action figure is worth the asking price. Normally, incomplete figures featuring original parts – especially including the dome, as this one does – sell for around US$250. This sample does have some problems, and that of course is the cause of the diminished value. He’s all there, except for the pair of parts that comprise the tongue and the dorsal crest that should be mounted between its shoulders. The rest is a matter of condition. Continue reading

ALIEN Action Figure Prototype.

UPDATE: Early indications support this item is indeed a prototype figure.

Recently, images of this ALIEN action figure claiming it to be a prototype appeared online. News of its existence will be of interest to ALIEN prototype collectors and ALIEN action figure and toy enthusiasts alike. It is almost complete with minimal parts missing but there is no doubting the significance of this find. Only the dome and tail are absent with all other limbs and body parts belonging to the the item present, with the legs and arms attached but loose on the figure. The jaw activation system lacks functionality as the return springs and other internal mechanism assembly are not present. Such an incomplete feature may indicate this specimen is an early viability test sample of the action figure.Curiously, Super 7 released a similar looking ALIENS figure in 2016, cast in a comparable pale blue which also featured white tongue parts much like those seen here. Was the finish of their “1986 pseudo ALIENS prototype” figure inspired by this item? This is a question I am also seeking answers to. I am currently reaching out to more knowledgeable individuals who may be able to shed light on this amazing find and I hope to publish details very soon.

Prototype, bootleg, art object or other oddity? I hope to have more exacting information soon. For now, enjoy April the First to its fullest and allow yourself to bathe in the currently unanswered questions regarding this beguiling curiosity. I am now seeking to unearth the answers to the mystery surrounding this alluring figure. Wish me luck.
