Assembled MPC ALIEN Model Kit Photos Needed.

Over the next couple of weeks, I will be working to complete an article investigating the different versions of the MPC ALIEN model kit here on HIDEOUS PLASTIC. I know six variants were published. These appeared during the years 1979 (Three samples: US, Ca, Ja.), 1984, 1999 and finally one more was published as recently as 2013. If anyone has any additional information about these kits, or of any variants including unofficial, bootleg and/or garage pressings, please let me know. I am also very interested in publishing images of assembled versions of the kit. As assembled samples can vary wildly, it would be ideal to post a gallery of finished kit items in the article. If you have any assembled MPC ALIEN kits (from any year) and would like to have photos of them on display, please contact me. Facebook is good. Fully or partially assembled, raw unpainted or fully painted or in any state whatsoever are all welcome contributions at this stage.

Please keep in mind, if you do choose to share photos to be included, you will respectfully retain full copyright on all published work and you will also be credited appropriately in the article. Please don’t send me photos other people’s uncredited work. That’s not cool. Instead, please pass the word around and help make this piece as thorough as possible.

I expect to publish the article sometime in mid March. We’ll see how well that pans out. Right now I am just getting started with early drafts. I expect it to be quite lengthy.

Loot Crate DX Ripley Figure this Month.

This months premium Loot Crate DX will feature a snappy stylised version of warrant officer Ripley. Holding her signature flamethrower along with Jones the cat and his cat box mounted on a circular stand, they all feature as part of the exclusive figurine. Here’s what the monthly subscription provider has to say about this offering “This month’s theme is “FIERCE”. In celebration of Women’s History Month, we honor these badass game changers in this month’s Loot Crate DX crate: FIERCE! Unbox premium collectibles and gear featuring Wonder Woman, Alien’s Ripley, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and She-Ra!” I’m sure this new version of Ripley will look great alongside the Alien Next Door Loot Crate exclusive released some years back; or even be a sweet companion piece to the Candy Rock ALIENS iteration of Ripley holding a pulse rifle, also released some years back. …or next to one of those super cute TITANS versions of Ripley. You can’t have too much Ripley. Apparently.

The offer for this Loot Crate ends 3/19 at 9PM PT and is priced at US$66 per crate, plus shipping.

ALIEN – Fate of the Nostromo Board Game.

Coming soon from internationally renowned jigsaw puzzle and board game manufacturer, Ravensburger, later this year is what appears to be a challenging board game of survival aboard the Nostromo during the events of ALIEN. Here’s what the publisher has to say about the basic premise behind the gameplay, “Executive Officer Kane is dead and the Alien stalks the halls of the Nostromo. Players must work together in this cooperative strategy game to craft items, fulfill objectives and complete one of five final missions. Choose your next move carefully; the Alien could be just around the corner.” The game will be playable either solo or with five players. Adding Science Officer Ash as an NPC is an option if you want to raise the difficulty stakes. Sounds good so far. Continue reading

UPDATED – Bootleg 1984 Tsukuda Hobby Vinyl Kit.

A few years back, I purchased a bootleg vinyl ALIEN kit. This kit was unassembled and a recast of Tsukuda Hobby’s 1984 repressing of Kenner’s 1979 ALIEN toy. Since then, I’ve moved a couple of times, set up house, published a book and finally found the time to actually start and finish assembling this kit. As such, I’ve now been able to add a gallery of photos of the completed figure to the page dedicated this weird and wonderful unlicenced sample. This sure is one unusual figure as it is an unofficial re-re-release of the old 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy in vinyl kit form. Finally, not only is this curious do-it-yourself item now fully assembled, it also helps to complete a page I’ve been wanting to add a series of photos of the completed kit  to HIDEOUS PLASTIC for what must be about three years now. He’s such a beauty, too. Go check him out.

NECA Reveal Panther Alien.

Today is Facehugger Friday. Sure, we haven’t heard from NECA for a while but as we found out a few days ago, NECA intended to reveal one of two upcoming Kenner ALIENS tribute figures. Which they have indeed followed through and done so today. One of the next items in their continuing range of revitalised and updated Kenner action figures is the Panther Alien; which NECA publicly announced on their Facebook page today. Not a lot of details accompany the reveal except NECA’s brief statement, The Alien Invasion continues…“. …and that’s it. There’s no information regarding the availability or pricing of this item just yet. One obvious question is raised by fans familiar with the original Kenner release, though. Will there be a black NECA variant figure to mimic the Night Cougar figure which was also released way back in the mid 1990s? Knowing NECA do like to churn out “repaints”, I am guessing this will happen.

Mexican Bootleg Dinosaur Alien Thingie.

If there is one thing I love about the ALIEN collector community, it’s diversity. The amazing range of collectible items ranges from small to large across four decades. While much of it is officially licenced and released to a surprisingly large and eager market, there’s also plenty of room – and demand, it appears – for a burgeoning bootleg output to exist as well.

For decades now, Mexico has taken the pole position in this regard. Not so much because their clandestine product is any good; but simply rather due to the opposite being true. Here, take this Predator riding an Alien crossed with a dinosaur for example. Isn’t this wild? Isn’t this outstanding? Isn’t this lurid, dubious and beguiling all the same breath? No one crafts unlicenced, head scratching product quite like they do in Mexico. Continue reading

More Kenner Tribute Aliens from NECA .

It looks like NECA will be releasing at least two more Kenner themed ALIEN action figures in the near future. This twitter post indicates one will soon be revealed. Of course, there’s no indication of what this pair of figures will be; and certainly, there’s no time frame of their release. Even “done” could simply imply sculpts and prototyping is now complete and much, much more work needs to be completed before retail items hit store shelves. Either way, one of these figures is ready to be revealed. I’m wondering what it could be? I’d be happy to see updated versions of Kenner’s Boar Alien and/or Cougar Alien represented in NECA’s updated 7 inch scale range of figures. Maybe one is a Space Marine..? We’re watching you, NECA, with great interest.

ADDED: SPACE VILLAIN Wave 3.

I finally found the time to add the set of SPACE VILLAIN Wave 3 ALIEN ReAction figures to their own page here on HIDEOUS PLASTIC. This is a great set of four figures. These items are now fully documented. Go check ’em out. My documentation of ALIEN ReAction figures is nearing completion. All the figures released as part of the ALIEN line are now represented. The only items missing now are the nine ALIENS items that were released last year.

Here’s the work in progress landing page with links to everything that’s been added to date. Just nine more figures to add and then I will be up to date. I’m hoping to see more ALIEN ReAction figures announced – or possibly released – on ALIEN Day, April 26.

ADDED: SPACE VILLAIN Wave 2.

Moving on now to slowly complete my ungoing documentation of Super7’s ALIEN ReAction figures, SPACE VILLAIN Wave 2 (A-2) ALIEN ReAction figures have now been added to HIDEOUS PLASTIC.  Wave 2 of this series is the third set of blind box 3.75 inch tall ALIEN collectible toys for adults to be released out to the world.Let’s see what’s on offer here. hmmm…  There’s a pretty blue one. He’s great. I love the color blue. One is covered in spots like a dalmatian, except it’s spots are a bloody red instead of black so maybe someone’s face exploded all over him. Another is a beautiful translucent amber with glitter inside giving it the appearance of freshly poured beer; and the final item in this group of four is brown. Just like poo. If you’re into that kind of thing.

XM Studios – Alien Hive Warrior Pre-Order.

Just when you thought there’s no need for any more large scale statues featuring face ripping space monsters, XM Studios goes out of their way to prove everyone wrong. Revealed today, XM Studios one third scale Alien Hive Warrior can now be pre-ordered. Now, this is one seriously feature packed brute and here’s what the manufacturer has to declare about this sizeable offering, “XM Studios is excited to present Alien Hive-Warrior! An original take on the Xenomorph, XM worked closely with Simon lee aka Spiderzero (world-renowned sculptor, concept designer and character artist) to co-create the concept design of Alien Hive-Warrior. Drawing inspiration from the original creation, this Alien concept brings to life the dark elegance, biomechanical flow and visceral quality of the Xenomorph. The Alien Hive-Warrior emerges from the Hive, enveloped at the base by a pulsing hive entrance pregnant with various stages of the Xenomorph lifecycle – Eggs in stages of ripeness, freshly hatched Facehuggers crawling with single minded focus. It moves steady and silent, displaying an alien flow and dynamism to its movement.”

This cold cast porcelain “premium collectible statue features” a pair of interchangeable heads with one boasting the classic transparent dome shape over the skull and another featuring a ridged/textured head with protruding tongue. What’s more, this item is no slouch. This large piece mounted on a base surrounded by a clutch of Alien eggs, being swarmed by multiple facehuggers is a whopping 78cm tall and weighs in at 20 kg. As a final attraction, the paint application allows eggs on the base to glow faintly in the dark. Which is simply great because I really love glow in the dark stuff.

Availability appears to be limited to Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Price is SG$2299 (US$1728) and does not include shipping or customs fees or any other import tariffs. Not too bad, considering what is on offer here. Unfortunately, you may have to be prepared to import one from the other side of the planet via a third party retailer if you want one as US, UK and Australia exist outside the licence shipping zone.
